Epistemic Uncertainty — Structural Reference

Orientation
Knowledge about a system, model, parameter, hypothesis, relationship, prediction, or state may remain incomplete.
Such limitations in available knowledge create uncertainty about the represented object without requiring the underlying process itself to be inherently variable.
Epistemic uncertainty concerns this knowledge-dependent uncertainty rather than variability treated as inherent in the represented process.
Problem Space
Knowledge Limitation
Available evidence, observations, assumptions, or model structure may leave relevant aspects of a represented object unresolved.
Uncertainty Object
The unresolved knowledge may concern a state, parameter, model, hypothesis, relationship, prediction, or external condition.
Uncertainty Representation
The resulting uncertainty may be represented explicitly through probability-based, interval-based, ensemble-based, model-based, or qualitative forms.
System Boundary
The epistemic uncertainty boundary separates uncertainty associated with limitations in available knowledge from variability treated as inherent in the represented process.
Within Boundary
Uncertainty is attributable to incomplete, limited, or unresolved knowledge within the represented system or model.
At Boundary
The relation between the current knowledge state, the unresolved object, and the representation of uncertainty is examined.
Outside Boundary
Inherent variability, implementation-specific estimation procedures, and operational decision rules remain outside the reference boundary.
